26th & 27th April, 2008

Michelle Badzgon and her family. Michelle honoured Doug with this wonderful letter, reproduced below with her permission.

Dear Doug,

It was such a pleasure meeting you at the Calgary Comic Book convention on April 26th.  My children and I were so excited and honoured to have met you.  I feel compelled to write you and let you know what an inspiration it was for me specifically.

I am going back to school after raising my family for the past 10 years.  I am now finally ready and able to pursue my dream of becoming a graphic designer and hopefully finding employment in the area of advertising and marketing.  I have been struggling with self doubt and second thoughts about going to school and starting a new career at my age (I am 38), but seeing your body of work made me realize that if you want something and are right for it, you will find your place in it.  I am an artist, but I want to do more than just paint nice pictures.  I want to really stretch and challenge myself.  I see you doing the same in your work.  You don’t have the luxury of using your facial expressions to emote your feelings; you have to find a different way – your own way.  And I, too, will find MY way in doing what I love.

Oh, and I have to mention that you are one of the nicest people I have had the pleasure of crossing paths with.  Meeting you was like meeting someone from my own planet.  I think we are probably kindred spirit and will hopefully cross paths again some day.  Until then, I will enjoy seeing you on the big screen and watching your career unfold!

Thank you again for your inspiration.

Best wishes,

 Michelle Badzgon
